I used to be a KDE user. I thought KDE 4.0 was such a disaster, I switched to GNOME. I hate the fact that my right button doesn't do what I want it to do. But the whole "break everything" model is painful for users, and they can choose to use something else.

What is the conclusion? We on the the open side of the software world all have one thing in common - Choice! Use what works for you!

KDE 4 marketed itself as an API as opposed to a desktop. That was just plain silly and when that API was stable with no applications built for it, they declared it stable and labeled it as "4.0". It was a dumb and stubborn decision and it took a lot of credibility away from the project. People judged that "stable desktop" as non-functional when in reality it was a very promising API..
With KDE 4.2 we're starting to see what a great desktop KDE can be and with the huge improvements it provides I'm sure it's only a matter of time before people who liked KDE 3.x come to appreciate the 4th version of this wonderful desktop.
